Liberties in Writing 2023-2024
What an exciting time we live in today! On the surface, we see brokenness, chaos, and uncertainty - but God promises us hope and through truth we are assured strength and support through even the most challenging times. I took a year off to help with our daughter's wedding and just 13 months later, our first grandchild was born. What joys and exciting times! As
my life has welcomed changes, most likely many of you are facing decisions on how to protect or guide your children through their education. God never ceased to amaze me when we homeschooled our three children to meet our needs and exceed them. It is with great energy and cheerleading that I encourage you!! You can do this! If you are in need of a writing/English class for your 10th-12th grade student- this might work for you!
Over the past 12 years, I have taught hundreds of students. I started out teaching Latin to elementary and middle school school students using Minimus/Secundus/and Cambridge Latin. That morphed into joining NCFCA in volunteering with our local club to encourage our children and others in their communication skills. Somehow, this led to an invitation to start a writing class at a new co-op in our community. Where there is a need and I feel I have the calling and time to fulfill it- I jump in knowing God will lead the way. He always does. I taught classes in the co-op setting for over 7 years until my husband's company moved us to Texas. I found it easier to meet the needs of families in our other state and new ones here by offering the course online. We meet on Teams once weekly for an hour. The time/day is decided by the schedules of the students in the class. Once I have students signed up, I'll send out a request for 'best' days/times for them and work to select one that is good for the majority. My schedule is wide open, I'm open to any days.
It is my joy to be able to teach new writing skills and encourage their natural talents! Never be worried your child won't be comfortable because of their skill level. I have seen reluctant writers become some of my strongest. We start with basics for the first 6 weeks- identifying good works by other authors we can emulate. Analysis, exploration, and even discussion (those students you think will never engage- do!) are a critical part of the class. The other is completing the work at home. This can often be the greatest struggle. But, we encourage and praise! The amount of work assigned will be 3-5 hours weekly- this course does offer 5 credit hours. The key is to not let procrastination be the first choice. All of these challenges we meet head on in this class and we have fun!
This class will grow their confidence in writing, analysis and work completion. A research paper is part of the course- 3-4 pages with 5 referenced sources. We devote 4-5 weeks to that task. Poetry, short stories, creative writing, precis studies, and even Socratic discussions help fill in the weeks. With an online class, I often provide excerpts in the class lesson or will give links to books available online so you do not have to buy a hard copy. I always encourage a hard copy- but I try to make it easy for the student to always have access to the reference materials we use.
If you are interested in signing up for this class, the first week's class will start either the last week of August or after Labor Day depending on which day of the week works best for the class. Please contact me at tara.hall@wordlyways.com if you would like to know more about the class. I start creating the lessons in July and hope to have them completed by August 15th. Thanks so much for your dedication to your child's education- it will serve them well and they will be grateful! God bless and always put any needs you have for your child's education in His hands- he will always lead you!
God bless,
Tara
